Announcing the launch of the first national policy for yachting in Malta at The Malta Superyacht Symposium held in July, Transport Minister Aaron Farrugia, heralded Malta’s success in the sector, with more than 1000 superyachts now registered under the Malta maritime flag.
Organised by the Malta Chamber of Commerce and the Malta Maritime Law Association, the symposium was a two day event bringing together maritime stakeholders to discuss how Malta can use its sea, ports, marinas, maintenance facilities and workforce to attract superyacht owners and grow maritime investment.
Leisure sea vessels are considered superyachts when their length is over 24 metres and as the flag’s attraction continued to grow over the past years, in 2020, Malta has become the largest superyacht register in the world.
“This is record growth never registered before and that gives us strength to work harder to continue to make this industry a strong economic niche for our country. This will help us diversify and exploit our sea and geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean,” Minister Farrugia said, whilst addressing the audience.
