From 156 countries surveyed in the 2018 World Happiness Report, Malta is ranked in the 22nd position in terms of the happiness of its general population. The sunny Mediterranean country ranked in this position with an overall score of 6.627, placing it above much larger countries in the region, such as France (6.489), Spain (6.310), Italy (6.000), Cyprus (5.762) and Greece (5.358). The top five positions in the World Happiness Ranking are the Scandinavian countries of Finland, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland.
The World Happiness Report is a landmark survey of the state of global happiness written by a group of independent experts. It was released on 14th March 2018 at a launch event at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in the Vatican, in celebration of the International Day of Happiness at the United Nations.
