Malta Introduces Nomad Residence Permit

Malta hosts a thriving community of entrepreneurial digital expats coming from other EU countries, who come to make the most of what the country has to offer in terms of climate, lifestyle and networking opportunities with like-minded people, adding more value to this growing community. The islands have been attracting young digital expats since the country became an international hub for financial services and digital gaming companies and this is transforming the islands into a multi-cultural, cosmopolitan country. Pubs and bars now heave with hip expats and locals, meeting up for after-work drinks in the early evening. Even traditional workplaces adopted a new corporate culture that includes fun and games while work hubs and co-working spaces with hot desks have become the freelancers’ go-to for networking, meetings and community life.

Residency Malta introduced the Nomad Residence Permit to welcome individuals from third countries, who may require a Visa to travel to Malta. It enables holders to retain their current employment in another country whilst legally residing in Malta. The Permit is open to individuals who can work remotely, independently of location, using telecommunications technologies. Nomad Residence Permits are valid for 12 months and can be renewed upon application at the discretion of Residency Malta, as long as the applicant still meets the set eligibility criteria. Applicants who are interested in staying for less than a year will be issued with a National Visa for the specific duration of their stay.

Eligibility

Applicants must prove they can work remotely, using telecoms. Applicants must also be third country nationals. In addition, applicants must prove they fall under any one of the following 3 categories:
