During the first quarter of 2022, 609 building permits for a total of 3,203 new dwellings were approved. The number of approved new dwellings increased by 59.6 per cent when compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
Apartments made up 71.3 per cent of the total number of approved new dwellings. The highest number of approved new dwellings (235) was registered in in-Naxxar.
Approved residential building permits and dwellings
During the first quarter of 2022, 609 building permits for a total of 3,203 new dwellings were approved.
When compared to the corresponding quarter of 2021, the number of building permits and approved new dwellings increased by 25.8 per cent and 59.6 per cent respectively. The average number of approved new dwellings per building permit stood at 5.3.
Approved new dwellings by type
The majority of new dwellings approved during the first quarter of 2022 were apartments (2,284), followed by penthouses (468), maisonettes (330), terraced houses (92) and other residential units1 (29).
Apartments made up the lion’s share (71.3 per cent) of the total number of approved new dwellings.
Approved new dwellings by district
During the first quarter of 2022, the number of new dwellings approved in Malta and Gozo and Comino increased by 65.8 and 35.7 per cent respectively. The highest number of approved new dwellings was registered in the Northern Harbour district (736) while the lowest number was recorded in the Western district (345).
Approved new dwellings by locality
The highest number of approved new dwellings were issued i In-Naxxar (235). This was followed by San Pawl Il-Baħar (209), Il-Fgura (172), Is-Swieqi (153) and Il-Mosta (135).
